Description

The process is entirely artisanal and consists of cutting long strands of gold, silver, or other metal from sheets; these strands are then passed through a die that shapes them into a U-shape with right angles. Two strands are then joined together to the required length without ever leaving the two ends.

The tube is ready to take on the desired shape and be modified as needed. The shape can be round, square, or triangular; ultimately, it can be any shape closed on three sides or more. Naturally, the more sides there are, the less flexible the tube is, with the round shape offering the greatest flexibility. Another important aspect is the thickness: the smaller it is, the less defined the corners will be.

The technique has remained unchanged over the centuries and is entirely manual. The only mechanical aid used today is a motor that rotates the axis on which the wires that will form the tube are wound, but human hands are still needed to hold the ends that are wound together.
